Nature Speaks

It is summer in Lincoln and Oh! how we wish you were here. The first wave of the season's blooms is on parade outside our home. I woke up early in the morning and took these pictures in the first light of the day. The dew wet my feet and the air felt cool. Suraj, Ravi and Sachi were asleep so I got this personal time to commune with nature. Come, walk with me a bit. This pleasant surprise is our first attempt at water gardening. The sacred Indian Lotus blossomed two days back. It closes at night and reopens in the morning. I sit and watch it often.
This Hibiscus flower brings many memories of home and Botany class dissections. In Lincoln it grows in summer only.

These are Floribund Roses that grow in a pot outside our front door.

This circle full of flowers is visible from the family room window. We plan and plant it meticulously every year. This bed was created after the fire. It was our homecoming present to ourselves.

This bed of marigold and roses is outside our bedroom. The pink rose blossoms like to peek inside.

Cherry tomatoes are abundant and very sweet when ripe.

The flowers in the center island were planted later and are still growing. The purple Liatrus was planted when we first moved here and is 18 years old.

Nine O clock is called Moss Rose in America.

This is blue Hibiscus. I discovered it in the nursery this year and it is delightful. It grows to six feet height and spreads four feet. Unlike the red variety this one survives winter.

These are the peaches growing on our new peach tree. Remember the picture of Suraj against this tree when it was in bloom? Now it is laden with fruit and if Suraj was standing behind it you would not be able to see him.

This is Rajnigundha growing from bulbs that our friend Jeetu Samal gave to us few years back. It is called Tuberose here. What an unromantic name for such a sensuous flower.

Aah! Dinner plate Dahlia!! Looking at these Sachi fondly remembers the dahlias Bou used to grow in her garden.

Hydrangea. We have planted four of these this year. They grow to a height of six feet. In alkaline soil their blooms are pink. In acidic soil their blooms are blue. I fed them acidic fertiliser to get these blue blooms.

This is Pink Kanaer. It is called Oleander here. It reminds me of a twelve feet tall long wall of yellow, white, pink and red bushes in Delhi. These lined the street where I used to catch the bus to go to college. Standing in front of my little potted bush I can hear my friends talking and smell the smoke from the buses.

We used to have Black Eyed Susans where these daisies are growing. When they got burnt in the fire I decided to put these to please Jyoti. She loves them.

This Canadian Goose sat in our yard the whole day yesterday. In the evening she was gone and has not come back yet. The Canadian geese winter in South America and go to Canada for summer. I guess we were this one's day stop only. There is a pair of Red Cardinals that nests in our yard and stays over during winter. I have been trying to photograph them but no luck yet. Few times I have also seen a deer nibbling at our shrubs. He looked very young early in the spring but now looks full grown. He is camera shy too.

We have two of these pots on either side of the front door to greet everyone.

Apples on our ten year old dwarf tree. These have to be sprayed every two weeks to save them from bugs. The new apple trees that we planted this spring sadly died. They had a year's warranty so we will get new ones next spring.

These flowers grow on Balboa Sunset Trumpet Vine. It grows under our Gazebo and wraps around it. Its growth is so vigorous that we have to prune it often. When in full bloom it is stunning.

Of course Sachi fades all blooms when he comes out. Do not roll your eyes!!! This Saturday is our thirty fourth wedding anniversary and this is my gift to him. He is number one in my heart.
He is slowly recovering and beginning to enjoy life. Every now and then he even goes shopping for groceries. Suraj and Ravi have to behave because he now notices when they slack off. Even I have to behave; I kind of got used to being the boss instead of just a co-boss. He plans to start working half time from July 21st. He will have to build his stamina real fast for this. I like having him home but I want him to choose to stay home. I am glad he will have that choice.
Enjoy the Summer. Enjoy it to feel the gift of life.
This gift that is tenuous and tenacious at the same time.
. . . . Ambi

What an enchanting splash of color....What a marvelous array of beauty......What an endearing proximity to Divinity. Soothing to the senses, softening to the heart, peaceful to the mind.......
Most of our turmoils of daily survival are settled by the emollient touch of flowers. Silent but so eloquent in expression, passive but so exuberant in manifestation, soft but so potent in healing......
Mother nature seems to have specially adorned herself with the most captivating kaleidoscope of vibrant colors for the upcoming Day when two of God's dearest children had decided to walk the path of life in unison, had tied the knot of eternal friendship, had brought about the union of two different cultures from two different parts of the country....A Day of reminiscence, a Day of thanksgiving...
Marriages, they say, are made in heaven.
But Marital bliss is what you discover and re-discover,
Create and re-create, cherish and treasure,
As both of you walk, hand in hand, heart in heart,
Through the unpredictable vicissitudes of life.
May the golden years of your married life
Kiss the wings of eternity......
A very happy and healing Marriage Anniversary to you both.....
The journey through your beautiful garden is enjoyable as it is refreshing. The flower that has blossomed the best is the one at the end! Soft though the exterior may seem, the contours hide beneath them a force of spiritual strength coupled with physical resilience that will be difficult to match, rare to encounter and impossible to better....
Cheers and Celebrations!

Dear Ambi & Sachi,
What a feast of colors - a rare treat indeed. Who wouldn't wish to be in such a heavenly house? I have shown the whole array of these beautiful pictures of flowers to your mother. She feels proud of your labour in growing & then presenting them so tastefully. The last flower she liked the most and has named it (him) Dahlia. It is so comforting
to see Sachi's blooming face which betrays no sign of illness.
Your stimulating portrayal of flower beds deserves
lot more comments but after Babi's
excellent post, in which he has said them all, any further attempt will merely be a repetition.
But lastly a very happy wedding anniversary to both of you with showers of blessings from me & your
mother. 34 years is a long period, but the memory of your wedding is so vivid, it seems as if it was yesterday.

Love, Daddy.

Dearest Sati Mamu & Ambi Main,

Many Many Happy Returns of the Day and A Very Happy Wedding Anniversary! (Belated)

Hope you both had a wonderful day together.. wish you many more to come..

I am currently enjoying my two months of lazy and relaxed vacation in Delhi..mostly eating all the goodies Mom makes for me and sleeping without any worries on my mind..by the end of these two months I am sure to have put on weight instead of losing some..which I have been trying to do since past few months..guess have to seriously start taking morning walks with Daddy from tomorrow.. :)

Got to go now as it's pretty late in the night now.

Wish you both a happy and healthy summer!

Pranam and Prayers,
Love always,

Pranam..Wish you both a very Happy Marriage Anniversary..We wish and pray, you have a very long life of togetherness and happiness..God bless you..Hope you had a wonderful celebration on that day.

Sanabhai..Wish you all the best for 21st July-your joining day..This is like joining school after a long vacation with some apprehension and more joy in heart..Our prayers and God are always with you..So everything will go well.

Nuabou..now coming to your wonderful pictures of extremely beautiful flowers of your garden..they are so perfect and nice that no words can describe their beauty..you really have a green thumb..that is why the garden is shaping up so well.I was really struck by the beauty of the Red and White Lotus-an auspicious flower used as offerings in temples..You know what it reminded me of? Looking at it immediately the picture of you as a bride in a red saree came to my mind..you were looking so beautiful, shy and happy..so many fond memories came flooding by..we were all so happy and excited to attend your wedding and welcome you to our family..Sanabhai,in chudidar, kurta and a turban was looking very smart and handsome..Everyone was happy-eating, chatting and celebrating a real big day.

Among other flowers I liked the Dahlias, roses, tuberoses, Blue Hibiscus and other blue flowers also..but the last flower looks the brightest-happy and blooming..may he always remain like that..The most beautiful flower is yet to come-Nuabou your list will be complete only in November.

We are doing fine..bye for now.

Love and Regards,
Nandini & Swarup.

The Day of bouncing back to the mundane flow of routine draws closer... Anticipation of resuming work intensifies the flow of adrenaline by the day.....Excitement of meeting old colleagues builds up by the minute.... The healing instinct for the helpless patient grows stronger by the second.....
It is a combination of numerous thoughts and anxieties that must be weighing on your shoulders now. As you go about building up your defenses and strengthening your response system, hidden to the curious stares of unconcerned strangers is that tiny speck of insecurity about how the body will react to what the mind has decided to make it follow.... Sleep well, dear one. Only those weak in heart fret over such concerns. Only those who have not experienced the multifarious faces of life as you have, get cowed down by such insecurities. Only those who have ensconced themselves in their small safe cocoon and misled themselves into believing that everything is hunky dory always, are broken by such possibilities. You have nothing to worry about, neither do you have anything to stress about....For, you have not only seen the glorious side of life, but you have also stood witness to its numerous downturns and absorbed countless blows of uncertainty.... Your roller-coaster ride through its colorful labyrinth has seasoned you to offer the clay of your substance to your Maker to mold into a brand new identity.....one that doesn't flinch or fall at every turn of events....one that doesn't falter or flee from every hint of defeat....one that is, above all, undisturbed and unperturbed in the face of adversity or advantage, failure or success, agony or ecstasy.....
All the very best and God bless....
