Yesterday was a big day. Definitely a red letter day. After many days of being home-bound the boys convinced Baba on friday that he was ready for the Mahapatra family Movie Night. We went to see Iron Man. It was a really good experience. Many of Suraj & Ravi's friends (the crowd was mostly young kids) came over to shake hands with Sachi and wish him luck. I thought this evening would be the highlight of the week; But on sunday, that is yesterday, we crossed another long awaited milestone that dwarfed the happiness of the movie night.
Ravi's college was honoring the track team with a banquet at the Embassy Suites. Sachi decided we should attend this. We got all dressed up, even Ravi (and I did not have to bribe him). Ravi lettered (which in America means excelled) in track and received the honor along with many others. We were seated at a table with a senior student and his family. The grandfather turned out to be a client of NHI and had been operated for by-pass surgery by Sachi's partner (Dr. Hedderich). They were a friendly group and we were enjoying the evening. The table was laden with all sorts of food; Chicken, pasta in alfredo sauce, breads, desserts and drinks. We were all enjoying the meal. Sachi seemed to be enjoying the conversation. Then unexpectedly he reached over and made a cup of coffee for himself. I stopped eating. He gingerly took one sip, then another. No coughing, no grimace, no choking. We both looked at each other with a pleased smile in our eyes. I wanted to stand up and hand him a certificate of achievement too. He followed the few sips of coffee with a spoon of cheese cake and finished the night with a scoop of mango ice cream at home. Today he stuck to the tube feed though. Tomorrow he is scheduled for the swallow test. I am sure he will do OK on it.
I have been very busy planting the annuals in the front yard. I gave Jyoti and Jeff two pots (pink Petunias and multicolored Gerber daisies) that in a month should be full of flowers. Jeff is the gardner in their house. He is planning some elaborate projects for their landscaping this year. Today it was 81*F. Soon we will be complaining of hot weather. Ravi, due to the athletics practice of many hours everyday, already has a mid-summer's tan. Few more weeks and he will match Barrack Obama, whom he plans to vote to power this election. He is growing a beard for a Mexican festival and has promised to shave on tuesday. He had shaved his head to empathise with Baba. Since Sachi (against all odds) never lost his hair, poor Ravi is waiting for his to grow.
Jyoti and Jeff are coming over for two days tomorrow. Maybe we will be able to celebrate Sachi's re-introduction to food. He is doing quite good with daily activities. I have not heard him complain of exhaustion after bath lately. He has also been paying some bills and sorting out the medical insurance papers. It is nice to have him moving around in the house all day; occasionally we even manage to annoy each other.
We are rejoicing time spent together.
I hope your life is as full as ours seems to be to us. . . . . Ambi.

Dear Bada dada,
This really calls for a celebration!! I am so glad to hear about your progress - I bet you are forging ahead at a much faster pace than the doctors must have anticipated!
You & Khudi & the kids have been absolutely exemplary in the way you have and still are, constantly doing better than your best - every step of the way. We look up to you all. When faced with similar challenges, if I can muster up even an iota of the courage and fortitude that you all have shown, I will consider myself blessed. I truly mean that.
I am praying that your swallow study today shows that you are back to handling all consistencies normally. All the best, Bada dada.
Love & prayers,
Pinky & Sushmit
Dearest Sati Mamu & Ambi Main,
Pranam.Sorry was not able to write to you both for over a week now..though have been reading all your posts everyday..as was busy at home most of last week with Achintya on leave for a couple of days and then I was a bit under the weather over the weekend..still recovering from the cold.
Main..Thanks for all the beautiful pictures of Sati Mamu, Ravi and the beautiful flowers in your garden..and thanks for your detailed, informative and beautiful update of Sati Mamu's recovery and happenings at the Mahapatra home..Main I can't begin to express how happy and thrilled we both are to know that Sati Mamu has started going out to the movies and is able to eat and drink again without any pain and difficulty..We both are pretty sure and positive that he will pass the swallow test today without any problem and you will be able to celebrate his re-introduction to food tonight as scheduled.
Sati Mamu..Congratulations on taking your first sip of coffee, a spoon of cheese cake and a scoop of your favorite mango ice cream after six weeks of tube feed..We both wish you all the very best for your swallow test today..we both hope and pray to God that you pass the test with flying colours..You already look so fresh and handsome after gaining 10 pounds..in the blue suit..We are sure with you starting to eat orally and with the diminishing effects of chemo and radiation you will gain the balance 10-15pounds in on time..giving Jeff, Suraj and Ravi a tough competition. :)
Ravi..Congratulations to you too on receiving the honor for excelling in track..It was very touching to know that you had shaved off your head to empathize with Sati Mamu..you look quite handsome with the short crop too! :)
Hope you all rejoice and enjoy your time spent together..as you all truly deserve it.
Wish you all a very happy, healthy and enjoyable summer!
Love always,
Leema & Achintya
Dear Ambi main and Sati mamu,
This is wonderful news!
While the battle may not have been a piece of cake but victory can certainly be celebrated with a slice of it.
Needless to say we are very proud of the way you both (especially you, main, with you wonderful words on the pages of this blog) have given us all solace and kept us optimistic all through this journey.
Here's to coffee & cake (strong & sweet)..... just like you both have always been.
Love and regards,
Seema & Sandeep
coffee, cheese cake, and mango ice cream! truly a breakfast of champions or... night cap. either way, i'm glad to hear it :)
life is all about the trials and tribulations. when you get hit, how do you face it? take the hit, and bounce right on back or sit there cowering in pain, unable to lift yourself up fearing what might hit you again? NO! well at least in your case.
anyhow, i'm just leaving work. this post made my day :) take care of yourself and please pace yourself. we mahapatras have a tendency to go overboard at times (speaking from my own life experiences!!!) but that doesn't mean your daily routine shouldn't include rabidi, kheer, gulab jamuns, and ice cream ;)
lots of love,
pranams,
vivek
p.s. i'll post the walk day email in a few - i keep meaning to update you on how the march for babies went this year. thanks for the donation! (got the check yesterday)
